Tracking the movement - Running
Juoksusta taiteeksi / From Running to Art
Aloin tutkia piirrosta osana juoksun liikettä vuonna 2022. Juoksun aikana tuotettuihin liikelähtöisiin piirroksiin tallentuu juoksemisen rytmi, aika ja juoksun liikkeestä syntyvä piirrosviiva.
I started studying the drawing as part of running in 2022. The rhythm of running, time and the drawing line created from the running movement are recorded in the drawings I make while running and drawing.

Juoksu on tietyllä tavalla hyvin välineistä riisuttu urheilulaji.
Cursor is a work that explores the act of running through artistic means. It moves across different layers, shifting between the runner’s inner and outer worlds. It has been important for me to foreground women’s sports and, at the same time, both draw from and challenge the representational conventions through which the sport is typically depicted, for example on social media. Despite the gender distribution within the sport, the visual culture of running is often perceived as distinctly masculine: it emphasizes performance, toughness, and competitiveness, leaving less room for the diverse experiential and embodied dimensions of running.
In trail running, the environment in which the act takes place is essential, as are the traces that repeated movement leaves in the landscape – the path becomes inscribed into its surroundings. The rhythm and movement of the body adapt to the shapes of the terrain: the ascents, descents, and the uneven, root-covered ground. Through the work, I also sought to engage with a theme strongly present in trail running: the relationship between humans and nature, and at times even a holistic experience of being in nature.
Running is, in many ways, a sport stripped of equipment. There is something primitive about it, which partly makes it so compelling – a simple way of being and moving.
I developed the script together with long-time trail runner Milla Toukkari. I have myself been running since I was young, both long and short distances in various environments, though preferably always in the forest. The videography was carried out in collaboration with Kim Saarinen.
The work was produced with the support of SKR, Taike, and VISEK.

Teoksen tuotantoa on tukenut SKR.
RINK is a work that examines the movement language, rhythm, and inner world of ringette through artistic means. The piece was built in collaboration with the NoU Ringette SM team, whose training culture, game dynamics, and embodied expertise form the core material of the work. The choice of focusing on a sport designed for women is a deliberate one.
The visual culture of ringette is traditionally characteristic of competitive sports: fast‑paced, tactical, and intense. In the work, this imagery is both utilized and challenged – bringing forward the experiential, embodied, and communal dimensions of the players, aspects that often remain in the background in media representations of the sport.
The work explores the internal structures of the game and transforms them into an artistic process. The surface of the ice, the marks left upon it, and the rhythm of repeated movement create a visual and spatial layering in which the players’ motion and mutual interaction become inscribed into the environment. At the same time, the work seeks to convey a spatial experience to the viewer: the acoustics of the rink, the coldness of the ice, the arc of movement, and the in‑game tension that shapes the distinctive atmosphere of ringette.

Tracking the movement - Dance
Tracking the movement - Dance is a piece that was performed and recorded at the 2022 S-Creatives Festival in Savonlinna. The audience could participate in the piece, where the creators of the piece took part in a silent disco at the same time as pencils were attached to their feet, which captured the movement created by dancing. The trajectories formed by dancing eventually formed one big collective drawing full of movement. The work was also presented in 2025 as part of the collaborative programme between Ars Libera, the Kuopio Artists’ Association, and the Kuopio Dance Festival. The production of the work has been supported by the S‑creatives Festival, the North Savo Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation, and Ars Libera ry.
